Kasama Municipal Council, in partnership with the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA), has commenced a month-long dog elimination exercise aimed at controlling the growing population of stray dogs and protecting public health in the district.
The exercise, led by the Council’s Public Health Department, seeks to reduce dog bite incidents and prevent the spread of rabies and other diseases. Areas covered on the first day included Jazz, Soft Katongo, and Mulenga Hills 2, where several stray dogs were removed.
Council Health Inspector Simon Chipepo said the exercise is being conducted under the Control of Dogs Act following numerous complaints from residents about stray dogs.
Residents shared experiences of dog attacks, with some victims calling for intensified efforts to eliminate dangerous stray dogs. The Council has since urged dog owners to vaccinate, register, and properly confine their pets, warning that dogs found roaming freely may be removed by authorised officers.
The local authority has also encouraged the public to report stray or suspected rabid dogs and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and community safety in Kasama District.
